Presentation from ‘Who wants tomorrow’s papers?’ event

Last week I really enjoyed participating on the panel for ‘Who wants tomorrow’s papers?

The slides I showed, with notes of what I said, are available here (4mb file).

Slide 1

Summary of what I put forward:

  • Understanding context in the real messy world is critical to success
  • Print news is different to online news. You can’t simply copy and paste content from one medium to the other.
  • Get the basics right first. At any given time, people only care about finding the information they need. They don’t care about RSS or Ajax or blogs or personalisation. They just care about getting the information. So get that right.

There should be a review of what was discussed on the event site shortly.Let me know any thoughts/questions!

The slide showing the relative importance of different media as the day progresses is very interesting. Is this based on anecdotal evidence or some sort of hard data? If it’s the latter, I’d love to know the source. Thanks for another great and informative post!

  2. Paul Adams Says:

    Hey Jessica,

The graph is based on research I conducted with 18 people. The research consisted of mapping exercises + contextual enquiry. People mapped out the relative importance of their news sources over time for the previous 48 hours or so.

Feel free to give me a shout if you want any more detail!

    Cheers, Paul.
